The Importance Of Reasonable Self Defense Within A...

The rationale applied to what is reasonable self-defense within a domestic violence episode wrought with repetitive explosive violence cannot be anything other than a battered woman fighting for her very life. These acts of violence occur within the safety of the home and are repeated in varying degrees. The climatic violent application of self-defense is warranted and cannot be remedied in any other fashion. Law enforcement officers intervening in domestic violence situations also face these same unpredictable variables. Although a domestic violence call can consist of an officer mediating arguments that got out of hand, most officers respond with caution. Not all of these calls are harmless and many officers have lost their lives. Drugs and alcohol increase the lethality index during these emotional crises. The enraged abuser often views the law enforcement officers as someone attempting to threaten their control, remove their power and possessions. These behaviors stem from learned behavior developed during one’s lifetime. This is referred to as the social learning theory and the concept was developed by Albert Bandura. Bandura said that people learn behaviors by observing and imitating others, i.e. individual’s model reinforced behavior.
